The Prism Perspective: Empathy 💞

Amy Bonaduce-Gardner | MAY 9, 2025

Hello friends,

Empathy is the ability to genuinely connect with another person’s experiences, emotions, and perspectives. It is sometimes attributed to the activation of mirror neurons, which respond both when we take action and when we witness others taking action. This process informs us of others behavior and intentions.

However, when empathy is experienced in a sympathetic state, its foundation changes.

  • Understanding gives way to assumption.

  • Instead of seeing another’s reality as distinct, we mold their story to fit our own.

  • Boundaries blur, leading to excessive appeasement—whether to avoid conflict or fulfill personal needs.

  • Hyper-vigilance heightens, extending beyond personal relationships into a broader application to the world.

  • Empathy can become a mask, deflecting others from truly seeing us.

  • Overextending empathy can leave us drained, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted

And what happens when another person shares their story from a sympathetic state?

  • Instead of allowing them to experience their own suffering and affirming their ability to navigate their own challenges, we attempt to fix and internalize it—signaling that they are incapable of handling it themselves.

  • This leads to a form of codependency, reinforcing their narrative even when it lacks a basis in reality.

  • By mirroring their emotions, we validate their story, shaping it into something more tangible, even if it does not reflect objective truth.

  • Responding with validation alone—such as saying, “I understand why that upsets you”—can unintentionally strengthen their narrative.

  • While disengaging from reinforcement may seem cold or distant, it allows the person to own their experience without external validation shaping it.

Empathy, in its healthiest form, allows presence without attachment—supporting others without absorbing their emotional weight.

Onwards, Amy
