The Prism Perspective: Father Time ⌛

Time. An infinite resource.

Einstein said that the faster you move through space, the slower you move through time. Time moves slower at the earth’s surface than it does above the atmosphere. Objects falling to Earth’s surface travel faster as they get closer to the surface. Time slows down to compensate for an increase in speed. Time stretches and contracts, varying with velocity. 1-hour near a black hole is equivalent to 7-years on Earth. And your head is slightly older than your feet.

But what about the parasympathetic experience of time? Are you looking to achieve more capacity? Get more done with the little time you have? Well, stop trying for one. The parasympathetic brain can focus on multiple tasks at once, and, as Yoda said, "Try not. Do or do not. There is no try." A parasympathetic brain can adapt to the environment quicker, identify the tasks quicker, and accomplish the tasks quicker. It’s efficient.

If you have an idea or expectation about how much time something takes, your feelings toward that can alter not just your experience but also how much time it actually takes. If you are stressed about getting somewhere on time, the mental experience is exactly that – stressed. The clock ticks slower, at least so it seems. It might literally take more time to arrive at your destination. If you are late but lack the need to arrive on time - along the lines of “oh well, let’s see how this actually goes,” the experience is closer to contentment, and you just might get there faster and safer.

A former dance teacher of mine used to say, “the time you arrive is the perfect time.” Arrive at a destination. Arrive at a significant moment. Arrive for the present.

Time is simply a suggestion.

When you make a decision about how to spend your time, are you all in? Or are you wondering what you missed out on?

As the holidays approach, I hope you are all in.

If you give a gift, it is because of an expectation, what you hope to get back, or because you genuinely want to give the gift?

If it's genuine, consider an activity instead of a thing. "The most precious gift you can give someone is the gift of your time and attention."

If you are into gift cards, consider one from Prism Movement Studio. Custom dollar amount gift cards can be applied to group classes, 1:1 sessions both in-person & online, or towards a membership.

Click here to purchase. Your support of small businesses is greatly appreciated!

Fun fact: Kelly's Dad attended group classes with her every Saturday for years. and now takes her online class Tuesday evenings. And my Dad shows up for classes at least once a week since I went online.

Other gifts to consider:

Weighted Blanket - external pressure that helps stimulate your valve system to increase its internal pressure

Moon Pals - weighted stuffies for the littles

If you are interested in an intriguing book about time, consider Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman.

Onwards, Amy
