The Prism Perspective: How Prism Got It's Name 🌈

Amy Bonaduce-Gardner | JUN 21, 2024

Hello friends,

Having had 2 female small business owner mentors in my life, I never wanted to be that person. I wanted the job that I could come & go from. I didn’t want the job that was my second marriage. But things change, and I found myself in a position where I could either do just that - be my own boss - or change careers entirely.

In toying with the idea of having my own business, I had been thinking about what to call my business. I didn’t have a physical location of my own, nor did I anticipate I would at any point, but the idea of a studio was tempting. I also knew that it needed the word movement in there because everything about me includes movement in one form or another. I spent a lot of time looking at images of butterflies and dragonflies, because that kind of image was appealing and seemed applicable. I found an image of a firefly that had prism-colored wings. And it reminded me of my mom.

When I was younger, my mom usually included some kind of old-school toy in our Christmas stockings. One year it was a stick cup and ball on a string. One year it was a prism. The kind you can hold up to the sunshine and rainbows would cast onto the wall. It’s the only toy I still have.

So sitting in my car in the parking lot of my daughter’s school and from my phone, I started Prism Movement, LLC. Publicly I would call it Prism Movement Studio. It was a moment of desperation, and not even remotely realizing that my business abbreviation would be PMS.

I’m sure my mom is getting quite the giggle out of that from heaven.

Onwards, Amy
