The Prism Perspective: Meet Elizabeth 🪻

Hello Friends!

Stories, because they are always based in perception mixed with an unknown and variable amount of reality, often don't hold much weight in Fajardo-Land. But some consider stories to be hardwired in our system and are considered essential for survival. They represent our unique experiences, wisdom gained, and teachable moments. Sometimes they hold the power to change the course of one's life. And as my slightly snarky disclaimer states, this newsletter was inspired from the stories that I hear from many of you, and this is my response back.

Meet Elizabeth DeLaBarre.

Elizabeth is a practitioner of The Fajardo Method of Holistic Biomechanics with a story many of you can relate to.

Elizabeth Before Fajardo Method® (Controlling E.): I thought my physical structure was optimal because I could do demanding yoga poses and bike all over the city and see a lot of clients and be active with my son. I thought my emotions and behavior were exemplary because I worked at examining my thinking from a witness stance from decades of mindfulness practices. And I thought my health was ideal because I was doing everything right - the right foods, supplements, and tests to understand everything from my genetics to my microbiome. But if I was so healthy, why couldn't I return to function after a whiplash injury? Even with many different therapeutic modalities, I got to a point where I didn't have the strength to tear open an envelope or fold a massage sheet or bike on flat terrain. I wasn't digesting the cleanest food without reflux or getting through the day without crying. I spent every moment that I was not working or parenting trying to rid myself of all the discomfort I was in physically and emotionally.

I thought I was doing everything I was supposed to in order to be healthy and be the most skillful practitioner I could be for my clients, and spent a considerable amount of time working on myself: meditation, psychotherapy, yoga class, and continuum classes (teaching and attending), regular bodywork alternating with acupuncture, extremely pure food (with more and more foods getting removed over time) - I could go on with that list! After the whiplash, many aspects of my health declined rapidly (immune, cognitive, digestion, dental, breast, pelvic floor, and of course, musculoskeletal and more). It was a very confusing time where I was faced with seeing that everything I had done before didn't yield results.

Elizabeth After (Content E): Now that I have an experience of an open structure and the way the body can function when not in the stress response, I see my pre-FM™ self in a very different light. I now have adaptability and resilience emotionally and physically, so I don't have to try to manage everything (the light, the noise, the food, the breath). I can have a fall off my bike or off the Bosu and not need 3 chiropractor visits to put me back together (I don't get bent out of shape.) I also have been able to bring many foods back into my diet: dairy, gluten, corn, nightshades, histamines, green tea and other beverages with caffeine, and more, plus I am no longer allergic to cats. Emotionally, I used to be controlling and judgmental despite really working on not being that way, but now my thinking generally doesn't go to those places and that is a relief. I also like having all the time back that I used to have to spend on self-care.

I asked Elizabeth what other modalities she was engaged in prior to FMHB, and the list is so long that it's included after that snarky disclaimer. It's impressive.

In this method, no one is doing anything to you. FMHB™ showed me that the nervous system has a plan, and the practice helped me get out of the way. This method also gave me the ability to observe the effects of my choices instead of needing someone else to tell me. I can observe how what I do with my body or my mind effects my nervous system/structure and choose if I want that effect or not.

We have an amazing design! If we are in the stress response, the nervous system will change structure and function everywhere in the body to give us the best chance to survive. And if we aren't under the structural and physiological influences of the stress response, then our bodily systems operate and coordinate together to function ideally and in a way I never experienced before.

Humans are highly adaptable. We can deal with the challenges that will inevitably happen if we cultivate adaptability in our nervous system by continuing to relate to our structure in our current environment.

Elizabeth teaches private sessions both in-person and online, as well as a group online class Friday mornings at 8:45am EST (I know west coasters are often early risers and you can show up in your PJs with your camera off! What a great way to start your day🌞hint hint). Contact Elizabeth (elizabeth@theparasympatheticlife.com) for more class details or visit her website for more information and some interesting blogs.
